Are you studying Agriculture, Agronomy, Botany, Conservation, Environmental Concerns, Forestry, Horticulture, Land Management, Landscape Design, Plant Pathology or a related field? If so, a scholarship may be available for you from garden clubs at the local, state, regional and national levels. 

Eligibility for a garden club scholarship

In addition to pursuing a field of study related to land or the environment, you must also meet the following requirements to be eligible for a garden club scholarship:

  • U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident of the United States

  • Full-time student, as defined by NGC:

    • Undergraduate enrolled for at least 12 graded hours of classes

    • Graduate students enrolled for at least 9 graded hours of classes

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.25 or greater (on a 4.0 scale)

Scholarship criteria

  • Academic record - 40%

  • Applicant's letter - 25%

  • Honors, extracurricular activities, work experience - 13%

  • Financial Need - 15%

  • Recommendation - 5%

  • Conformance 2%

Scholarship winners (2018-2019)


Winner of the 2018-19 CAR-SGC Scholarship was Daniel Ilkow, who was nominated by The Garden Club of New Jersey.

Several scholarship winners from CAR-SGC member states received a scholarship from National Garden Clubs, Inc. for the 2018-2019 academic year:

  • Paige Baisley, Federated Garden Clubs of New York State, Inc.

  • Andrew Yates, Garden Club of Ohio, Inc.

  • Isaac Marshal Leach, The Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania

Application process

Visit the websites for your local and state garden clubs for details regarding any scholarships they may offer. Application deadlines may vary and some may provide additional details that are specific to their local scholarship awards. (You will find a link in the footer of this page for all CAR-SGC state garden clubs.) State Scholarship Chairs will nominate applicants for scholarships awarded by the Central Atlantic Region of State Garden Clubs, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc.
